Katherine Jenkins and Il Divo are not opera stars. KJ has never appeared in an opera. She's a pop singer and about 10% of her repertoire is short excerpts from operas, sung entirely out of context, and badly.

Il Divo I know little about and care less.

Umm...Just because someone was born in London doesn't mean that they have either the right or ability to represent London and indeed the country at large.

These people are supposed to be the face of Britain. Is this really what our culture represents in 2008? A double decker bus (minus the graffiti), a pop star, a footballer and a f**king moron (Boris Johnson) who is so caught up in the hype of the "games" and making quick wins from cost-cutting exercises to projects like the Thames Gateway Bridge (which would benefit most of those who live in SE London/North Kent)that he has no focus on what really matters.

I feel sick thinking of how our cultural values have changed so much over the years and how inadequate our little show looked next to what the Chinese put up.

I totally agree - this is an ominous portent of things to come if the morons in power do not pull their fingers out and get busy with investing more in infrastructure, policing and reversing social exclusion

Here is my take on Polish workers who take over the building of the games after British workers walk out on strike, as the Police demand extra pay back dated to defend the games.

The 2012 games will take place in 2016.

Decent wages for workers from Poland Pakistan and Iraq. all used to try and build the games.

The Dome Wembley, the eye all built on time British workers time.

Bloody Hell Sceptic! I do enjoy your stuff - the odd disagreement not withstanding.

Trouble is, having studiously ignored any and all coverage of the Peking thing, some of it (the best bits probably) went right over my head.

As for 2012, I have a deeply uneasy feeling that the world will be a very different place by then - and not just in terms of the inhabitants of Downing St and the White House either. There is a geo-political/globalised financial system shit storm gathering that I fear will make talk of whether or not we live in a 'broken society' seem quaint - not to say crassly irrelevant.

It should make for an educational run-up to the climax of the 'BRITISH' Olympiad
