Anecdotal evidence says that an awful lot of mephedrone users are either (a) people who would have bought ecstasy if mephedrone hadn't been easier to find & cheaper and (b) heavy ketamine users who fancied a buzzier but equally compulsive alternative. (Mephedrone seems to be more compulsive than E & have a nastier comedown, although the latter may just reflect taking more in an evening.) So patterns of drug-taking would change if mephedrone disappeared from the streets tomorrow, but I don't think the overall level would change very much.

Legislating against the use of drugs is many times more harmful than if drug taking was treated in the same way as Alcohol and tobacco. Prohibition in the USA was a lesson to be learned but a lesson that has been completely ignored.

It is interesting to note that the government have now blatantly stocked the ACMD with yes men which they have been doing behind the scenes for years all through the public service. Everyone now is so immune to the scurrilous things that Labour get up to it hardly causes any protest whatsoever. The public have been conditioned by this unscrupulous lot that they have everyone acting like sheep.
